This is my horse Bubba. He just had his teeth floated and is sleeping. We stood a long time before he woke up. He is my dream horse.

He is a little down in the mouth and a bit long in the tooth.

This is Spirit. She lives at Hearts and Hooves where I came to trim her hooves. She was not too happy at first but realized it was ok, and let me trim after a bit of a fuss.

************************************************************************************************* ALPACA TRIM! I trimmed my first alpaca this week. Spirit was not too happy at first, but once she realized I was not going to hurt her, she did much better with allowing the process. Look for photographs soon (as soon as I find my cord to download the camera to the computer). ***************************************************************************

May and May 2, 2010 I spent the two days at the Livermore Stampede. I was in the parking lot shoeing, trimming and tacking shoes back on horse's feet. I saw a lot of friends and made new ones. It was very pleasant weather so it was not too hot horse shoeing. Seemed like everyone was having a good time. The trend was that the horses that where shod on Thursday threw shoes. I put them back on at the owner's delight. That meant they could continue riding and not have to go home. I learned a lot and am looking forward to my next event. Thank you to all my clients and customers. ________________________________________________________________
I had a great time at the Whole Horse Wellness Clinic. My demonstration consisted of me lecturing about bare foot trimming. I did not prepare a set speech, but did the demo on the fly. It turned out pretty well. I had to finish the trim out back after the demo. I had a small crowd watch the demo and the trim. The mare was wonderful. She did not have any feet issues. The owner was grateful. On Sunday I trimmed another horse that really did not have any unusual hoof issues, but I did get some very happy audience as they were in hopes of doing their own trims... I wished them all wellness. *******************************************************************************

I had a little vender space inside the building, but out side the arena. I got to see all the activities up close that where happening in the main arena. I gave the first part of my bare foot demenstration with a horse shoe as my visual aid. I did trim on a two-year mare. She was a bit nervous, but we did it.

Imagine being amongst the top notch horse health experts and having information at your feet. Well at least in my case at your horse’s feet. Imagine being one of them. I never thought my dream would come true, but on March 20th and March 21st, it did. I was one of the demonstrators at the Whole Horse Wellness Clinic to help fund raise for the California Cowgirl Rodeo drill team. There where five demonstrations going on each hour at the same time. The wealth of information was priceless and so many horse owners missed out on such a spectacular event.

The few that did attended walked away with a wealth of knowledge and resources. The high light of the event was a raffle to raise money for the Girls. There was a paint pony a little less then 14 hands, and a nice potential for any young rider. One young man took to this pony and we all cheered when this fine new owner took position of his gallant steed. He was so happy. He had spent the entire weekend bonding with the pony even before he won his prize.

I know this pony went to a good home as the rest of us know also.

Good job.

Rock fragnment from Cayman's hoof

As you can sort of see the rock fragment is about one centimeter long.
The sharp end facing to the left was in first, and was the sharpest side of the rock.

It is a piece of gravel, but went I was extracting it, I really thought it was a piece of obsidian. Upon examining the rock I realized it was gravel, much to my disappointment.

I was really hoping the rock fragment was obsidian which would be possible due to the location of the pasture.

I got pretty excited.

The black spot at the tip of the toe is the abscess site.
I pulled the rock out. While trimming the other hoof, I cleaned more rock debris out only to find a second abscess. Both hooves where treated and wrapped.

Continuing Education:

In the Spring of 2008, I attended the San Jose Symposium for upcoming Scientist as a judge for the science fair.

One of the future scientists had conducted a scientific experiment on velocity. Her project was the Twinkie Drop. It was very interesting and very well done. Because of the simplistic nature of the experiment, I felt she would not get a well deserved recognition.

Because I am a geologist, I was judging for Earth Science, not physics.

Because I am my own boss, I honored this young lady by presenting her an award sponsored by (Me) Cheryl Smith Professional Farrier Services. I telephoned the appropriate people and got permission to go to her school to present her award and give her some perks.

This are Bubba's front feet before his trim. He is on a four week trim schedule for optimum performance and soundness.

This is Bubba's feet before his trim. I almost did not purchase Bubba 7 years ago because his feet where so bad. He had not been shod on a regular schedule. His previous farrier talked me out of shoeing him much to my resistance.

Bubba is toed in on all fours. His feet where so out-of-balance when I purchased him, he kept tripping and falling down with me on him.

His farrier fixed his feet, and I have kept up his trims for the past four years.

He can go back to shoes, but does well without them. His hooves are very hard.

The bruse is from thrashing in his horse trailer. I got rid of the trailer.

He is it 17.3 hands. His owner, Lisa has had him since he was young. He has served her well. As a team, they are spectacular to watch practicing their jumping!

Big Ben is a Thoroughbred/Warmblood.

Cheryl Smith Professional Services was started in 2006. I consider learning this trade after my farrier kept encouraging me to think about attending school. Because I did not want to make such an investment and commitment, I worked with a local farrier who showed me the profession. After nine months I signed up at Pacific Coast Shoeshoeing School. Two days after graduation, I had my first appointment.
